Ordering is simple, determine: 1) Whether you want one, two, three, or four wires connected to the ground rod, and
2) The size of wire you are using. Everything you need (except the ground rod) is in the kit.
3) You will need a sparker of some kind to start the weld material. Available below.
Harger Uni-Shots are made for 5/8” ground rods only. We don’t recommend using 1/2” or 3/4” ground rods; however, you can use mold sealer (found below) to use Harger Uni-Shots with 1/2” ground rods.

What is it? Exothermic welding is a welding process for joining two electrical conductors. it uses a superheated copper alloy to permanently join two conductors (ground rods and copper wire). The heat comes from a copper thermite composition that is ignited from a flame or spark. The products we carry contain everything needed for a complete welding of wire to one ground rod. No special equipment, molds, tools, or experience is necessary. it is very easy and affordable.
Benefits: Finished connection is permanent, totally weatherproof, buriable, and 100% reliable. Connection does not loosen, corrode, or increase in resistance over time.
Installation is simple: Install ground rod, place ceramic mold over rod, insert wire(s) into mold, pour in powder, put on cap, light the mixture with suitable sparker, and stand back while the welding takes place. Then let it cool for five minutes and bury your ground rod (if desired.) That’s it!

Mold sealer is soft clay material used to seal around the wires and/or the ground rod
when using an exothermic weld mold. It will hold in the molten metal puddle and
prevents it from burning through or dripping out before cooling/hardening. Comes in a
1 pound block; dozens of uses from one pound.

My ground system design at the new QTH required several ground rods and AWG #4 solid copper wire to connect them. I had never used Harger Uni-shots, but wanted something better than a mechanical connection. After watching Chris’ “how-to” video I figured even I could do it. I was right. They are easy to use and work great if you just follow the video instructions. My tip: Be sure to get the flint ignitor tool and especially the mold clay! I was able to make a professional weld the first time and every time. Your ground system is pretty darn important. Do it once and do it right.

I used two of the Uni-Shot exothermic welding kits to add a second ground rod to my existing ground system. The process was easy and created a great bond. KG4KNB

When installing my ground system, I wanted to make sure my grounds were done right the first time, and not have to re-do them later. So I used Uni-shots. No need for checking or re-tightening for looseness. It’s done right!
